So, I'm reading this psych paper on the appeal of movie monsters (For my short Radical Fiction essay, I'm talking about Frankenstein), and I come across a reference to a book it cites, about the effects of movies and fear.

A book which was written by one Jonathon Crane.

Yes, really.

Well, I was amused. I wasn't expecting that at all.

Today, the internet have been talking about their hobbies. At least, my bit of the internet have - they've been talking about stuff they knit, crochet and sew, the hand-made cards they're hoping to do for Christmas, the astonishing cakes they can bake. I was thinking omg, I wish I had a hobby. (I'm even wearing a necklace my partner's mother made for me. O hai, artistic inadequacy.)

Then I remembered I write approximately a novel's worth of fanfiction a year, and felt better.

(It's a shame, though, that I can't make people things, but I suppose I could - I put drabbles into the birthday/festival cards of everyone who would appreciate it. In fact, I may do this, if I send any end-of-year cards this year.)

Three fic-related things, while I'm thinking about them:

1. [info]yuletide sign-up is finally done, polished, dusted, and I hope that's it and I won't have any more last-minute realisations that I've forgotten something or I've misspelled something else (and omg, my recipient will think I'm a moron o hai paranoid interior monologue) or I've suddenly discovered a passion for, I don't know, RPF. (I think this is unlikely, but I redid my signup with six minutes to spare last year, so. You know.)

2. I have a fic in progress. It is a fic I have had in progress for a long time. It is a Harry Potter fic, about Hermione, and I've been writing it all this time because I really wanted to write a personal development story about a female character, and have it be good, because it was dawning on me that within the fandoms I write in, I don't do this enough.

But it would make sense, if I'm going to finish it before, er, January, to write it and post it before the [info]yuletide assignments go out. I don't know if I can manage this, but now I've written it down that I want to, maybe I will. Yes.

(Oh! Quick-hit: The Supervisor's Tale, by [info]a_t_rain. I meant to rec this at the time and completely forgot, although I did mention it to a lot of people - in brief, it's an adorable, touching story of Hermione writing her thesis with McGonagall as her supervisor, written for [info]femgenficathon. It's just lovely.)

3. And lastly, a meme, nabbed from [info]thistlerose, partly because I iz sheep and partly because I love fic commentaries, reading and writing, and I never have the time to do full-length ones any more.

Pick a paragraph (or any passage less than 500 words) from any fanfic I've written, and comment to this post with that selection. I will then give you a DVD commentary on that snippet: what I was thinking when I wrote it, why I wrote it in the first place, what's going on in the character's heads, why I chose certain words, what this moment means in the context of the rest of the fic, lots of awful puns, and anything else that you'd expect to find on a DVD commentary track.

Fic is under the fic tag or, barring the very last few stories, in memories and slightly better organised.

That's it. Must run, Taruithorn awaits.

First snowfall this week. You can also see here. I like the snow, at least compared to wind and rain. Truly winter now, Norway. Get out your mittens and reflectors.

Did I miss wank in the BSG fandom? Because that secret and the comments make me think so (well, coupled with some deleted journals I've spotted).

If you haven't already, you can leave your address for Christmas stuff here. My address can be found here (if you're on my flist, at least).

My Christmas wish lists )

Or just something you think I would want ;)

Finally, Africa might be getting a new sea. Huh. Curious. Our world really is a world that keeps change, tectonically and otherwise.

Now I have weekend, marzipan and a new DVD with Marple stories. What's your weekend treat to yourself?

TITLE: The Demon Lord
PERPETRATOR: Dark Dragen
SUE-O-METER: (toxic)

FULL NAME: Harry Potter, the Demon Lord. LMAO! I'm picturing skinny little Harry as a demon!
SPECIES: demon
HAIR: red
EYES: He doesn't need glasses anymore. "his eye although still green, had a hint of red in them"
MARKINGS: black wings, muscles, "his facial features were now more defined and better looking", his scar is gone.
POSSESSIONS: a "Power Ritual book" that he uses to unlock his demon powers.

ORIGIN: Typical "Woe" backstory complete with abusive uncle!
CONNECTIONS TO CANON: Hates everyone. The pairing at ff.net says he'll be with Daphene Greengrass.
SPECIAL ABILITIES: Super-hot. Can change how he looks and his gender at will.

NOTES: A penis that is "now thicker and about nine inches long". I'm imaging Genoa Salami size. He'll clearly need some sort of supportive device. A male must have written this story, hands and giant penis down.

Funniest thing I have ever read. EVER. )

Mostly, today has been Novemberish. Notes and queries:

1. It's November 5th, and I am slightly wistful on this account; I am very tempted to buy sparklers and run around writing rude words in the air, but possibly this would like slightly silly just on my own. I do have a proper bonfire and fireworks to go to at the weekend, but waaah, don't want to sit in on my own tonight, want fireworks. Also a pony and a job, shut up self. I really ought to get down to work in a moment.

2. Signing up for [info]yuletide from SCHOOL! That was a genius idea. And then I could sign up in Firefox 3.5 and not break all my add-ons.

Of course, it would have been more of a genius idea had I not a) not thought of it, and broken all my add-ons; and b) buggered up my sign-up twice running anyway. It's not like I'm offering thirty fandoms or something, I'm offering five and this year they come with handy tickboxes. Sigh.

(One thing that always makes me surprisingly happy is that according to the participants list, I am the only person in these parts of fandom writing under "Raven" or a variant, despite ff.net having appended "25" to mine when they outlawed non-unique usernames. It sounds silly, but I have written approximately 300,000 words of fanfiction over eight years under that name, and it's important to me now.)[1]

3. Sitting up on Headington Hill while drafting Baby's First Deed of Transfer, I had a very good view of the sunset. I reckon it was too dark to read outside by 4.10pm. Am I the only person who forgets, every year, that this happens? That it's not something you read about in books, it actually is only going to be light for six hours and you're going to spend all of those in school. It was a depressing realisation when there is still almost six months of winter to go. To be fair there are things about winter I love - sharp cold, woodsmoke, the sense of things coming - there is still an aura of decrepit Novemberishness about the place today.

4. On a slightly sillier note, Google have discovered a town that isn't there. On the whole, I think towns that aren't there are very interesting. Pripyiat is a town in Ukraine that isn't there, and Centralia is a town in Pennsylvania that isn't. They are both fascinating places.

However, [info]hathy_col and I have driven through that field. Mostly, we have driven through it at seventy miles an hour singing. The not-thereness of the place can hardly be over-emphasised. I am vaguely impresed.

5. Other interesting thing from today's news: increasing numbers of people who aren't vegetarian, but eat very little meat. The article isn't very profound, but I have always wondered why this is never talked about - talk about vegetarianism in the media always seems to be framed by this odd (possibly Western?) model that people who eat meat are carnivores and people who don't are vegetarians, and there is no continuum between the two, and no complex reasons for why people eat what they eat, or anything.

There is no number six. I need coffee, and I need sleep, but I only get to have one of those. Into the breach again, I s'pose.

[1] Admittedly I do exclude the possibility that the name is not used because I have taken it.
